Arverne East is a multi-faceted development that will transform a 116-acre vacant, oceanfront site within the Arverne and Edgemere neighborhoods of Queens. Arverne East’s programming is guided by community engagement to produce a thoughtful approach to development - one that directly addresses community needs while reflecting and enhancing the surrounding community and cultures.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

Arial photo of the Arverne East Nature Preserve from Beach 49th Nature Preserve: The Nature Preserve is now open to the public. Access to the boardwalk entrances between Beach 44th and Beach 56th is open. See details on upcoming programming below.
Multi-Purpose Building: Opening information will be shared soon.
Project Site Fence: The development team is working with HPD and other agency partners to secure the entirety of the Arverne East Development site between Edgemere Avenue to the North, the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk to the South, Beach 32nd Street to the East and Beach 38th Street to the West. The site will be fully secured with fencing, and security is anticipated to be further enhanced by installing security cameras throughout the site where possible. The site clearing of these blocks is underway, starting from Beach 32nd Street and working towards Beach 38th Street. Placement of fence-mounted concrete barriers will start after clearing is complete.
Boardwalk and Beach Access: Access to the boardwalk entrances between Beach 44th and Beach 56th is open. Per NYC Parks, the shoreline through the Rockaway Beach Endangered Species Nesting Area between Beach 38th and Beach 57th has reopened. You may now walk the shoreline and access this section of the beach from the boardwalk. Access from the boardwalk west of Beach 47th has been reopened, and access to the full beach east of Beach 41st and west of Beach 47th is open.
Edgemere Avenue Infrastructure Improvements: The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Arverne East will conduct critical reconstruction work along Edgemere Avenue between Beach 32nd Street and Beach 38th Street to protect the area from the impacts of climate change. Edgemere Avenue between Beach 32nd Street and Beach 41st Street is now closed to accommodate this work and will remain closed for approximately 18 months. Beach 35th Street will remain open to motorists, and the Southside sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians. Both westbound and eastbound lanes of this portion of Edgemere Avenue will be closed. Motorists are advised to take detours to Rockaway Freeway, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and Beach Channel Drive during the road closure. Work is being performed at the intersection of Beach 35th Street and Edgemere Avenue; Beach 35th Street will remain open to vehicular traffic. Variable message signs will be placed at key locations to inform motorists. Communication with local stakeholders will be on-going as the project progresses. Check the News section of our website for the detour map and updates. New water main work will commence between Beach 32nd Street and Beach 38th Street. While no extended water service interruptions are expected, if any are planned, notifications will be sent out and posted accordingly. Beach Green Dunes III: Concrete work has started on site. There will be concrete trucks entering and exiting the site intermittently during normal work hours. Utility connections on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 35th will be starting shortly. A maintenance and protection plan for traffic will be implemented accordingly. The site will be closed September 2nd-4th in observance of the holiday.
